Is it OK to have a small amount of ice cream for the afternoon sweet?

I thought when you do this diet you can't have any dairy at all? Don't we need dairy to build strong bones?

Congratulations! I think you two are the first to post on the new server. So apparently it's working. Whew!

The original Asa Banana Diet recommended something like chocolate or "wagashi" (Japanese sweets, usually based on sweet azuki beans) for the 3:00 p.m. snack. Ice cream was specificlally discouraged, not so much because it's dairy, but because it's cold. As you may remember, frozen bananas and cold water are also discouraged.

The whole idea is that cold food makes your digestive system work more or get weaker or something. There's another thread here where someone points out that eating cold stuff may cause your body to burn more calories, which would seem to be good. But the Asa Banana Diet authors didn't like cold food and thought it would make it harder to lose weight.

I personally think much of the background "theory" of the diet is bogus, and the diet works for a lot of people for simpler reasons: the regular meals and daily schedule, the replacement of breakfast with high fiber fruit, the elimiination of sweets (which are a stumbling point for many dieters) except in mid-afternoon, and the idea of not eating to complete fullness and being more aware of your eating.

So I think that it's worthwhile for forum members to selectively modify the diet and see if it still works (and report back to us, of course!). That way we can gradually work towards a version that is more adapted to the West.

I think the reason they say to drink luke warm water is because they are asian. I'm chinese and I've always been told that drinking cold (specifically iced) water in the morning is bad for you. It's more healthy to drink warm water to keep your body nice and warm for the cold mornings. I don't really know how that works with weight loss, but my impression of this diet is more so to keep your body healthy and stress free. I personally feel happier and less stressful considering that I'm a college student. I really enjoy taking my time with my banana and my cup of water every morning. ^^

I'm love to have some dessert, such as Banana Split for the high tea. It's not only refreshing but will help to prevent the constipation as well!

So, anyone here want a banana split? :D

I think if you really are aiming on staying healthy then just follow the MBD, drink lots of water and keep eating non-fat snacks between major meals.

I actually thought the basic diet rules discourages Ice cream both because of its fat content and dairy. I stopped eating ice cream many years ago when I found out what it was made of...urgh!!!

Usually, any diet regimen does not recommend ice cream. The idea of dieting is to reduce weight whereas intake of ice cream would only add to the existing weight. Even small quantity of ice cream is not advisable while on a diet. :p

I heard of a great ice cream substitute: bananas! You freeze them and then put them in a food processor and blender. It's suppose to have a consistency similar to ice cream and it tastes delish.

Frozen grapes are good also, like little popsicles.

Hi everyone,

It has been really nice to read about the success everyone has been having with this diet. I will try the MBD diet with some variation to it. See I've been doing a variation of the New Beverly Hills diet off and on for years and when I stick with its concept I do well, only when I fall off the wagon, lets say the weight comes back. The concept is to eat as much fruit as you like, you just cannot combine the fruit. Then you wait 2 hours before you eat anything else, to give the fruit time to pass through your digestive system. However that particular diet recommends fruit such as pineapple, strawberries, grapes, prunes - all high fiber fruit, supposely because of the enzymeic effects. It DOES work. This week I think that I will try the bananas and see if it has the same effect. Last week I sarted the variation of the Beverly hills diet on Monday today is Sunday have loss 6 lbs. So next week I will do the exact same thing only this time I will use bananas. they are defintely cheaper!

I will keep you posted
