View Full Version : Room Temp Water Vs. Cold Water

I noticed that it recommends drinking water at room temperature and I was curious as to why. I've tried looking it up but most places say that cold water is slightly more beneficial when dieting. Any insight into this would be very much appreciated. :)

I don't really understand this myself. In his book the diet's main promoter, Hamachi, devotes a couple of pages to it, in answer to questions that he received on the Mixi community. He says that when you drink water at a lower temperature than your body temperature, your body adjusts to increase its ability to heat.
At first glance this sounds like he's saying the body will burn a few more calories, so I'm not sure why this is bad. It may have some Chinese medicine connection, since his wife is trained in that.
He says you can drink hot water or something like English tea with ginger in it, but you should wait 15 to 30 minutes after your morning banana breakfast to do it.
Personally, I think the effectiveness may simply be that by having the rule, your beverage becomes pretty boring (although he suggests that you'll learn to like and taste the deliciousness of water). If your beverage is boring, you'll only drink it when you need it for thirst or to avoid choking, so you won't use it to wash more food down like the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest people do (an extreme example, but I think in general these days people do drink sodas in such a way that it allows them to pack in more food before they feel uncomfortably full).
He says milk and dairy products are generally healthy, but you should avoid them while losing weight, and he says you should avoid soy milk also, just on the general principle that water is better because it doesn't trigger digestive movement by the intestines.

Its hard to resist cold water during the summer but its not so bad.

Tap water straight from the faucet can be pretty bad tasting in Tokyo during the summer (but it's good tasting in winter). I think most Morning Banana Dieters either get some sort of filter or use bottled mineral water. Japanese kitchen plumbing is not really set up to make installing a filter convenient.

i live in near the equator (tropical area) so is it the temperature of the water diff? so do i near to drink cooler water?

Hi, littlepudding. You ask a very unusual question!
I don't think the difference in temperature would make that much of a difference. Cold water is not recommended in the Morning Banana Diet because it supposedly causes your disgestive system to work harder and get out of whack. Hot water is also not recommended, but it isn't as strongly discouraged.
But water that is just a little different in temperature, like water in Japan and at the equator, would not make a difference, I don't think.

What about room temperature green tea (plain of course) throughout the day? It increases fat oxidation up to 20% I hear.

I think I read somewhere that room temp water is recommended because it is more "natural" and doesn't put stress on your body to warm it up...then supposedly a non-stressed body functions more efficiently, therefore burning fat easier.
But I have also read (not for this diet) that drinking ice cold water burns more calories because your body has to work harder to warm it to body temp...
So I guess both have their good points.

I have actually heard that cold water for your body makes you hungrier than normal and want to eat in excess so maybe that is why the diet wants you to drink room temp water. They say that is one of the reasons we get so hungry after swimming in cold water.
