I stumbled upon this book by Naomi Moriyama, with the title Japanese Women Don't Get Old or Fat. It talks about how most Japanese women are naturally slim because they don't eat processed food, they stick to natural and fresh foods such as fatty fish (chock-full of healthy omega-3's), vegetables, fruit, green tea, rice, soy, and noodles. They also get their exercises naturally by walking, biking, and commuting instead of driving. It also mentioned the ever famous hara hachi bunme (eat until you are 80% full) saying. Interesting book, but has anyone else read it? Is that how the Japanese really are? Would this be great in addition to the Asa Banana Diet?

Hi bebe.
This blog post (http://calorielab.com/news/2008/01/17/why-japanese-people-in-japan-dont-get-that-fat/) by a Japanese living abroad is pretty interesting. She gives her opinions on why Japanese are still (relatively) slim, and the commenters also chime in. I think they cover all the main factors.
One factor that is not a contributor is some sort of genetic propensity to be thin among the Japanese. Wishful thinking overweight Americans sometimes make this claim. But Japanese do just simply eat less. You don't need to make up stories about genetics.
